George’s Story: From a Time of Need to Giving Back

Just six months ago, George Wilson was experiencing an extremely difficult period in his life. He had no fixed address, was unemployed and facing financial problems.

Today, George has his own home, works full-time as a barber and is debt-free.

George was introduced to Target Housing while he was on a hospital ward. It was there that he met Lily, who helped him begin rebuilding his life.

George explained:

“I was introduced to Target Housing when I was in a time of need. I was on a hospital ward, had no fixed abode and my finances were a disaster at the time.”

Lily helped George find a property, regain control of his finances and take the steps needed to return to employment. She continues to support him today.

“She helped me get back into the real world. She found me a property, helped me get back on my feet financially and supported me back into employment.”

George’s progress demonstrates what can be achieved when someone receives practical assistance, consistent encouragement and support tailored to their circumstances.

Reflecting on how much his life has changed, George said:

“Fast-forward six months and I now have my own house, a full-time job as a barber and no debts.”

George recently attended Target Housing’s Community Services Event in Doncaster, where he offered free haircuts to people currently using support services.

It gave him an opportunity to use his professional skills while giving something back to an organisation that had helped him during a difficult time.

“As someone who used the services and still receives help, it’s nice to be able to give back and support those who need it as well.”

By volunteering at the event, George was able to offer others more than a haircut. He brought with him an understanding of how it feels to need support—and showed how dramatically circumstances can change when the right help is available.

George credits Lily and Target Housing with giving him the encouragement he needed to move forward:

“I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the support of Lily or Target Housing—helping me make those steps and giving me that push that I needed.”

George’s journey from having no settled home or employment to building a secure, independent life is a powerful example of resilience, opportunity and the lasting value of personalised support.
