From Recovery to Employment: James’ Journey Back to Work

March 6, 2026

James* was determined to rebuild his independence when he first connected with support services in July 2024.

Having experienced a difficult period in his life, including a stay at St Catherine’s Mental Health Unit, James was receiving support through the Doncaster Complex Lives project delivered by Target Housing.

While his support worker Terry helped him address issues around alcohol dependency and housing stability, Cost of Living Navigator Lorraine Kiryluk worked alongside him to explore ways of building confidence and preparing for employment.

Together they began by looking at volunteering opportunities and updating James’ CV. Lorraine supported him with several job applications and interview preparation.

Although James attended two interviews earlier in the year without success, he remained determined and used the feedback to improve his approach.

Later that year, James moved into his own flat and took part in a three-month work placement through the World of Work programme delivered by St Leger Homes of Doncaster.

While the placement did not immediately lead to a job offer, it gave James valuable experience and helped build his confidence.

James continued applying for roles and remained focused on his goal of returning to work.

His persistence paid off.

On 17 November 2025, James started a full-time permanent role with Tesco, earning above minimum wage and taking a major step forward in rebuilding his independence.

His journey highlights the importance of ongoing support, determination and the belief that positive change is possible.
