For Richard Haram, becoming a Learning Disabilities Support Worker at Hull LD wasn’t just a change of career — it was the start of finding real fulfilment. Richard joined Target Housing six months ago, and in that short time, he has become a valued and trusted member of the team.
Before joining Target Housing, Richard spent ten years working in the motor trade. Although he enjoyed aspects of the job, he always felt that something important was missing. He wanted to make a difference, to help people, and to feel a deeper sense of purpose in his work.
That search for fulfilment led Richard to become a facilitator at Andy’s Man Club, where he supported men’s mental health, and to start coaching rugby, helping others to grow in confidence both on and off the field. It was during this time that he realised what had been missing all along — the feeling of genuinely helping people.
This discovery set him on a new path: becoming a Learning Disabilities Support Worker.
Richard’s favourite part of his role is the feeling he gets from helping others. He describes his work as something that “almost doesn’t feel like work” because he enjoys it so much. Every day, he supports tenants to build independence, learn new skills and feel valued — whether through cooking, community activities, personal development or simply being there to listen.
He often says that his job gives him a sense of purpose that he had been searching for throughout his earlier career. The small wins, the progress tenants make and the positive relationships he builds remind him daily that he is doing something meaningful.
At Hull LD, Richard has found exactly what he was looking for: a role that allows him to help people, make an impact and feel fulfilled. His journey is a powerful example of how the right job can align with your values, your skills and your heart.
