Marshall – Helping Tenants Build Confidence and Independence

For Marshall, being a Housing Support Worker at Target Housing is about more than offering care, advice or emotional support. It is about helping tenants develop the confidence and practical skills they need to manage their home, sustain their tenancy and live more independently.

Marshall supports tenants through every stage of their tenancy. This can begin before they move into their Target Housing accommodation and continue as they settle in, understand their responsibilities and become more confident managing their home.

His role involves identifying the areas where each tenant may need support and working alongside them at their own pace. This could include understanding tenancy paperwork, accessing the correct benefits, managing money, paying rent and household bills or learning how to budget effectively.

Marshall also helps tenants understand their rights and responsibilities, look after their accommodation and manage their use of gas and electricity. Where concerns arise, he offers practical guidance to help tenants address them before they put their tenancy at risk.

Building and maintaining positive relationships is another important part of the role. Marshall supports tenants to communicate with neighbours, local services and partner organisations, as well as helping them deal with disagreements or disputes constructively.

One of the tenants Marshall has supported is Adam.

Through regular check-ins, practical guidance and emotional support, Marshall has helped Adam access the benefits he is entitled to, manage his money, bills and rent, and stay on top of the responsibilities that come with maintaining a home.

Marshall has not taken over or done everything on Adam’s behalf. Instead, he has worked alongside him, giving Adam the opportunity to make his own decisions, take responsibility for his progress and develop the skills he will need for future independent living.

With greater stability in his tenancy, Adam has also been able to begin looking towards his longer-term goals, including exploring employment opportunities and a possible return to teaching.

Marshall’s work demonstrates what being a Housing Support Worker at Target Housing is really about. It requires compassion and patience, but also organisation, professional judgement, clear communication and the confidence to have honest conversations when challenges arise.

Most importantly, it is about empowering people—not simply supporting them in the present, but helping them build the skills, confidence and independence to manage a home successfully in the future.
